Title
PROCLAMATION TO DESIGNATE APRIL 2024 AS EARTH MONTH
Body
Recommended Action:
Recommendation
Motion to proclaim April 2024, as Earth Month in the City of Delray Beach.
Body
Background:
Since the first Earth Day on April 22, 1970, the world has celebrated this day as a time to become more aware and involved in protecting the natural resources of our planet. Now Earth Day is recognized by more than a billion people each year as a time to recommit to taking personal actions to eliminate waste and conserve resources. As the impacts of climate change become more apparent and pronounced Earth Day takes on even greater significance and will require more than 24 hours of reflection to encourage quantifiable change. During this April 2024, it is especially important that we all take concrete and permanent steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 50% by 2030, and reach Net-Zero emissions by 2050. The City of Delray Beach is drafting and will implement a Climate Action Plan that will be targeted at achieving the aforementioned greenhouse gas emissions reductions, along with multiple steps to increase the resilience of our community.
