Recommendation

Recommended Action:

Special Events Technical Advisory Committee (SETAC) recommends the Development Service Management Group (DSMG) make a Motion to deny the special event known as Delray Beach Fine Art Show by Hotworks to be held on January 25-26, 2025.

Body

Background:

The Institute for the Arts & Educations, Inc submitted a Special Event Application on May 1, 2024 to hold the Delray Beach Fine Art Show by Hotworks. The event would be on NE 4th Ave and NE 1st Street. It is a high quality, juried fine art and craft show with sponsors, food vendors and a youth art competition to expose students to doing art shows for a living. This show has been held in Boca Raton since 2008 and was voted top 100 art shows in America. The show can not be held in Boca because of Boca's 100th birthday celebration. The event producer is looking to close NE 4th Ave from Atlantic Ave to NE 2nd Street and NE 1st Street East and West bound between the alley ways from January 24th at 8am until January 26 at 9pm.

Special Events Technical Advisory Committee (SETAC):

SETAC was unanimous in voting, 10 - 0,  to recommend denial of this event.  It was said that Delray Beach has numerous Art and Craft shows already.  The police Department spoke about how this event would fall 2 weeks after the big Art Festival on Atlantic Avenue and just a few weeks before another craft show in the same footprint on 4th Avenue and that it was too much for the city. Fire Department agreed with PD that there are already a lot of events planned during the busy "season" and maybe the applicant should consider a different date.  It was also mentioned that this would have a three day road closure instead of a 2 day closure and how that would impact the tenants on those streets. When asked about the youth art competition, the event producer named schools that were involved, but when asked if they were in Delray Beach they didn't know. The event producer then stated they would invite schools from Delray Beach to participate. SETAC was in agreement that there is not a need for another art/craft show.

Funding Source/Financial Impact:

Anticipated city costs are to be determined.

Timing of Request:

The event producer needs to know if they will be able to have their event or not.
