Background:

This is an amendment that updates and clarifies the composition; and makes changes to the duties and responsibilities of the Police Advisory Board, in order to strengthen the purposes and mission of the Board. The proposed ordinance would reduce the number of Police Advisory Board members from thirteen (13) regular members to five (5). All board members appointed by the City Commission shall be subject to the provisions of Sections 32.06 to 32.18 of the Code of Ordinances. The proposed ordinance would also update the duties and responsibilities of the Police Advisory Board to serve as liaison between the Police Department and the community; to provide the City Commission, City Manager, and Chief of Police with community informed input and recommendation on public safety matters including Police Department programs and services; to, upon the request of the Chief of Police, provide input on proposed or current police department policies and procedures, and to review and make recommendations concerning such other matters as may be referred to the Board, from time to time, by the Chief of Police, the City Manager or City Commission.
