Body
Recommended Action:
Recommendation
Motion to approve requests for funding from the Law Enforcement Trust Fund (LETF) for fiscal year 2023-2024 pursuant to Florida Statute 932.7055, Disposition of Liens and Forfeited Property.
Body
Background:
Florida State Statute 932.7055, Disposition of Liens and Forfeited Property regulates our Law Enforcement Trust Fund (LETF) distribution. Any local law enforcement agency that acquires at least $15,000 pursuant to the Florida Contraband Forfeiture Act within a fiscal year must expend or donate no less than 25 percent of such proceeds for the support or operation of any drug treatment, drug abuse education, drug prevention, crime prevention, safe neighborhoods, or school resource officer program or programs. These funds may be expended upon request by the sheriff to the Board of County Commissioners or by the Chief of Police to the governing body of the municipality, accompanied by written certification that the request complies with the provisions of the statute and only upon appropriation to the sheriff’s office or police department by the Board of County Commissioners or the governing body of the municipality.
The Police Department created a standard application that fulfills the necessary requirements mentioned above. Requests for funding are submitted using the application and are reviewed by the Chief of Police prior to submitting the request to the City Commission for approval. Only upon Commission approval will funds be awarded to the applicants. The City of Delray Beach Police Department requests funds from the Law Enforcement Trust Fund (LETF) be distributed to the following entities which have been reviewed and approved by the Chief of Police:
