Body
Background:
The Delray Beach Police Department requests approval to submit an application to the Department of Justice's Bulletproof Vest Partnership program. If awarded, this program would provide 50% of the cost of the bulletproof vests purchased for our Police Officers. The Delray Beach Police Department currently has a Bulletproof Vest award with the Department of Justice (DOJ) and this application represents an opportunity to extend our current award program. Bulletproof vests are necessary life-saving equipment which Law Enforcement Agencies are required to procure. According to the DOJ website, "The Bulletproof Vest Partnership (BVP) is a unique U.S. Department of Justice initiative designed to provide a critical resource to state and local law enforcement." The Police Department is projecting one hundred twenty-nine vest purchases (new personnel/turnovers, as well as mandatory replacements which occur on a five-year cycle) in the next two years at a cost of $1,131.90 per vest for a total of $146,015.10. The total request from the Bulletproof Vest Program is $73,007.55, which, if approved, will account for reimbursement of 50% for projected vests.
