Title
CONSIDERATIONS TO RECOGNIZE ROY SIMON

Body
Recommended Action:
Recommendation
The City Commission is asked to discuss and consider ways to appropriately recognize longtime resident, architect, and community leader, Roy Simon.

Body
Background:
Since longtime resident, architect and community leader Roy Simon passed away in August of 2024, the Commission, staff, the Simon Family, and other members of the Delray Beach community have searched for an appropriate method to recognize his life and contributions. Mr. Simon was involved in many aspects of the City and most in the community wish to see his legacy of involvement properly memorialized.

Some discussions were held by the Commission for a memorial swing to be placed on the grounds of Old School Square. This idea had been investigated by staff in conjunction with the Rotary Club (Mr. Simon was a long time Rotarian) as an appropriate method of recognition by which the public could sit and reflect while taking in the activity of the City and activity at Old School Square. Various types of swings were investigated for their construction and durability for the suggested location. Additionally, there was discussion of potentially naming a public parking lot (or future parking structure) for Mr. Simon as he was intimately involved in the creation of the Downtown Development Authority and subsequent efforts to ensure sufficient parking existed in the downtown district. Other methods of recognition should be discussed though no additional appropriate memorial efforts have yet to be identified.

Once the Commission has determined a direction for any recognition, planning and cost calculation can begin so that the determined method can be in place as soon as practical.
