Background:
The Delray Beach Police Department seeks approval for the ammunition order from Florida Bullet in the amount of $56,728.10. This order includes ammunition for training and on-duty use. The itemized list of ammunition for this purchase is attached.
Ammunition is a requirement for Law Enforcement Agencies. Standardization of ammunition is very important. It is necessary for the Department to use only one kind of ammunition for duty use (certain kinds of ammunition for certain kinds of weapons) and comparable ammunition for training. Consistency is needed for officer training and to maintain standardization in how the weapons perform. When selecting ammunition, factors that are considered include: casing, bullet weight, propellant, toxicity (of airborne fragments subsequent to fire), and bonding.
The specific ammunition the agency utilizes was selected due to FBI ballistic results, and the training ammunition is very similar in ballistics to duty ammunition, resulting in reduced training costs. The recommendation for the ammunition was approved after testing by both Delray Beach Training Unit and FBI ballistics lab. The Delray Beach Police Department has been utilizing the same manufacturer of ammunition (SPEER) for over ten years.
