Title

DISCUSSION OF BEACH PROMENADE BENCHES, PLAQUES, AND STONE MEMORIALS PROGRAM

Body

Recommended Action:

Recommendation

Seeking direction from City of Delray Beach (“City”) City Commission regarding addressing existing and future beach promenade benches, plaques and stone memorials.

Body

Background:

The City over the years has installed plaques and memorials on behalf of residents on City property.  During the Beach Master Plan, many of these plaques and memorials were affected when the City needed to remove benches, landscaping or infrastructure due to the work at the beach. Staff removed these items and stored them.  However, City Staff is seeking direction on what actions should be taken regarding these items.  The Parks & Recreation Department is offering the following options:

Beach Bench Plaques:

1.                     Re-mount the plaques to the proposed new beach benches (Public Works has confirmed that the plaques can be attached to the new benches)

2.                     Re-locate the plaques to another existing beach in another City location

3.                     Re-locate the removed benches, along with the attached plagues to another City location assuming that the bench can be reinstalled.

4.                     Not replace the plaques and dispose

5.                     Return the plagues to the families.

Beach Memorials:

1.                     Replace the current memorials to their original or nearby beach location if possible

2.                     Re-locate the memorials to another location within the City

3.                     Not replace the memorial and dispose

4.                     Return the memorials to the families.

Brick Program:

Implement a new program to replace the plaques and memorials with bricks that are installed around the flags located at the beach front.
