Title

GRANT AWARD / FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH / EMERGENCY OPIOID ANTAGONISTS

Body

Recommended Action:

Recommendation

Motion to accept an award of emergency opioid antagonists through the Helping Emergency Responders Obtain Support (HEROS) Program from Florida Department of Health.

Body

Background:

The Fire Rescue Department is requesting approval to accept an award of emergency opioid antagonists through the Helping Emergency Responders Obtain Support (HEROS) Program from Florida Department of Health. The purpose of the program is to reduce the number of drug/opioid overdose related deaths and adverse events by providing emergency responders with the appropriate pharmaceutical resources to address this crisis.

Fire Rescue members respond to opioid overdose incidents on a routine basis. Naloxone is the primary drug used to reverse the effects of an overdose.

The Fire Rescue Department submitted application and was awarded 500 doses of intranasal Naloxone (Narcan) and 1200 syringe doses. To receive the award, the Fire Rescue Department was required to register for the Minnesota Multi-State Contracting Alliance for Pharmacy Agreement (MMCAP) as well as have the ability to report Naloxone administrations to the Washington/Baltimore High Intensity Drug Trafficking Overdose Detection Mapping Application Program (OD Maps). The emergency opioid antagonists will be shipped sometime in late November of 2018.

City Attorney Review:

Approved as to form and legal sufficiency.

Funding Source/Financial Impact:

This is an award of 500 doses of intranasal Naloxone (Narcan) and 1200 syringe doses; no match is required.
