2019 PALM BEACH COUNTY EMS GRANT

Body

Recommended Action:

Recommendation

Approval for Fire Rescue to submit a 2019 EMS Grant through Palm Beach County.

Body

Background:

Each year Palm Beach County receives a state grant that is specifically for improvement in emergency medical services. This year the county has received funds in the amount of $160,789.00 and requires these funds to be solely used to improve and expand pre hospital EMS. This grant is a reimbursable grant.

The department will be requesting grant funds to purchase the Handtevy Pediatric Dosing system. This is an aged based dosing system, meant to replace our current length based dosing system (Broselow Tape). Medical Research conducted in Polk County, Fl has shown a 25% increase in the survival of out of hospital pediatric cardiac arrests when using this age based approach. This treatment allows for more rapid and accurate administration of Epinephrine, a front line medication, administered in the course of treatment of a pediatric cardiac arrest.

We have received EMS grants from the County on multiple occasions upgrading our EMS equipment. The 2018 EMS Grant provided a grant for $36,279 to the City of Delray Beach for one Ferno Stretcher. The 2019 EMS Grant will provide a grant for $9,000.00 to the city of Delray Beach. This money will be used to purchase the Handtevy system. This money is 100% reimbursable from the EMS grant through Palm Beach County.

The Handtevy Pediatric dosing system assists first responders and paramedics by providing an accurate age based pediatric medication dosing system. The following list is some of the features:

 Highlights

                     Customized Dosing

                     CPR Documenter

                     Equipment Sizing

                     Code Documentation

                     Real- Time Verification

                     Code summary generation

                     Emram 7 Compliance

                     Crew Resource Management

                     Medication Error Reduction

                     Reduced Provider Anxiety

The Handtevy Pediatric Aged Based Dosing system will replace our older less accurate and slower length based pediatric dosing system.
