Background:
The Institute for Regional Conservation (IRC) would like to collect herbarium specimens (museum vouchers) of both native and non-native plants found growing on City property for use at the University of South Florida herbarium, with duplicates deposited at other institutions in special circumstances. They are seeking to collect seeds, cuttings and divisions of native plants found growing on City property, specifically City beaches and the Atlantic Dunes Park, in order to support its Restoring the Gold Coast program. Restoring the Gold Coast program is a collaborative initiative to restore the incredible diversity of native plants and animals native to coastal beaches and dunes in southeastern Florida, along the historic Gold Coast from Miami-Dade to Palm Beach County, teaching the importance of protecting our coastal dunes and working toward restoring damage done. Diverse dunes are healthy, strong dunes, and our first line of defense against sea level rise and catastrophic storms.
The IRC will use the seeds, cuttings and divisions of native plants to work directly with local native plant nurseries to grow and distribute plants within the program. Providing access to City property for this service promotes the health, safety and welfare of the the residents of Delray Beach.
