Background:
The Palm Beach County Coastal Resilience Partnership (CRP) began in 2017 as the ‘Inlet to Inlet’ group when neighboring municipalities met to discuss adaptive measures to withstand extreme weather events and prepare for future effects of sea level rise and climate change. CRP seeks to procure a Community Climate Vulnerability Assessment (CCVA) and acknowledges that a collaborative regional approach would be cost effective and would advocate a more coordinated implementation of policies across jurisdictional boundaries.
The CRP was formed by an Interlocal Agreement (ILA) in 2019 between the City of Delray Beach, City of Boca Raton, City of Boynton Beach, Town of Highland Beach, City of Lake Worth Beach, Town of Lantana, the Town of Ocean, and Palm Beach County. The ILA process allowed for multiple grant projects to be funded and municipalities to administer collaborative efforts. A series of workshops were held by the CRP in early 2020 to collect input from the community, municipal and Palm Beach County staff, and from elected officials.
The CCVA will explore climate threats, identify and evaluate community assets, assess vulnerabilities and risks, investigate potential adaptation strategies and provide a GIS-based interactive mapping tool for the use of Participants. Tasks 1 and 2, exploration of climate threats and identification and evaluation of community assets, were paid for by the FDEP FY 19/20 Resilience Planning Grant administered by the City of Boynton Beach. Tasks 3-4 dealing with assessment of vulnerabilities and potential adaptation strategies, were funded by budgeted contributions from each of the eight Participants.
This presentation will provide an update on Tasks 1 and 2 of the project which evaluates the data provided by the CRP to consider assets and the threats posed to each municipality.
