Title

PUBLIC ART ADVISORY BOARD RECOMMENDATION TO PURCHASE "SHY DANCER" SCULPTURE

Body

Recommended Action:

Recommendation

Seeking City Commission direction on entering into an agreement with Mr. Whyman for the purchase of "Shy Dancer" for $5,000 and for the installation at the identified location.

Body

Background:

At the June 8, 2021 City Commission Meeting, the City Commission directed the administration, based on a recommendation from the Public Art Advisory Board (PAAB), to negotiate with the Pineapple Grove Mainstreet Advisory Board (PGMAB) on either a loan of two Jeff Whyman sculptures or a donation of them to the city. At that meeting, two locations were identified for the installation of said sculptures (see attached).

Since that meeting, it has come to the city's attention that the two sculptures are no longer available through the PGMAB. Consequentially, Mr. Whyman has since approached the PAAB with his offer to sell one of the sculptures, "Shy Dancer", to the city for $5,000. This is the same price originally offered to PGMAB.

At the August 23, 2021, PAAB meeting, the Board voted unanimously to recommend purchasing "Shy Dancer", in the amount of $5,000, to be installed at the same location identified: NE 2nd Avenue between NE 2nd Street and NE 3rd Street.

There is a balance of $40,000 in the Public Art Fund. The purchase of this sculpture is a permitted use of the fund, number 115-79-791-579-31-90.
