Title

SUPPLEMENTAL NUTRITION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM & FRESH ACCESS BUCKS PROGRAM APPLICATION AT THE DELRAY BEACH GREENMARKET

Body

Recommended Action:

Recommendation

Authorize Executive Director to serve as Responsible Official for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) & Fresh Access Bucks Application and authorize the Executive Director to execute all documents related to said purpose.

Body

Background:

CRA staff is in the process of applying to become a Fresh Access Bucks (FAB) outlet, which will allow the CRA to accept Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits at the Delray Beach GreenMarket.  FAB is a United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) funded statewide nutrition incentive program that increases the purchasing power of SNAP recipients to buy fresh fruits and vegetables at farmers markets and other approved grocery outlets.

There are 66 participating farm direct outlets including farmers markets implementing the SNAP/FAB program across the State of Florida, and over 338 participating farmers.  If the Delray Beach CRA is able to implement the SNAP/FAB program at the GreenMarket, it will be the only farmers market within Palm Beach County, and only one of two or three farmers markets within the South Florida tri-county area, to accept SNAP.

The GreenMarket is a centerpiece of the community, and with the addition of the SNAP/FAB program, it will address increasing food access and affordability while continuing to connect farmers and producers to consumers and residents throughout the CRA District.
